Deccan rice is now on our shelves — and we are one among the first few stores in Germany carrying it. If you have been ordering Sona Masoori from a general Asian supermarket with no brand name on the bag, this changes that. Six Deccan varieties, all in stock, all deliverable right now across Germany.

What we carry, right now

If your household runs on Sona Masoori the way most South Indian households do, the 10KG bag is the one to order. It lasts, and the price per kilo works out better than the smaller pack. With festive cooking coming up, now is the time to stock the pantry.

Who is Deccan

Deccan started in the UK in 2008, founded by Kiran and Sunitha Pola — friends and family scattered across countries, all missing the rice that tasted like home. That gap became the business, and it has since grown into the UK, US, Canada, UAE, Australia, and now Germany.

Deccan sources from local farmers across Telangana and processes at their Sultanpur facility using Japanese Sortex sorting technology, which separates grain by size, colour, and quality before it is packed. The point of all of it: keep the variety intact and keep out the broken grains and impurities that lower-grade rice does not bother sorting for.

Sona Masoori is a rice that punishes shortcuts. Get the sourcing or processing wrong and you end up with grains that break, clump, or turn starchy the moment they hit water. Not what you want under a plate of pulihora or a bowl of curd rice. You can taste the difference in texture more than in flavour — grains stay separate, do not turn gluey, and cook evenly whether you are steaming it plain or making a big pot of biryani rice on the side.

Why it matters for us in Berlin

We started Aahaar because the Indian grocery aisle in a general Asian supermarket rarely stocks the right regional brand. Deccan gives us a real regional range — Sona Masoori, Jeera Samba, Indrayani, Ambemohar — that lets us put the actual rice people grew up with in front of them, not a generic substitute. Not novelty, just the right thing, reliably, and available today.
